In This Episode

Healthcare often rewards efficiency, compliance, and the search for the “right” answer. Yet when the goal is human flourishing, the better question may be how to build systems, habits, and communities that help people live and lead with more energy, clarity, and purpose. What would change if health were treated like a life-long strategy instead of a transaction?

Dr. David Haase, a physician specializing in personalized and systems-based medicine, argues that sustained health starts by looking at the whole person rather than chasing isolated symptoms. For entrepreneurs, he suggests prioritizing brain health, protecting sleep by treating the bedroom as a sanctuary, and continuing to learn as a way to preserve cognitive function while aging. Health improves when people make daily decisions that support energy, resilience, and long-term purpose.

In this episode of The Decision, Robert Hartline and Eric Jackson sit down with Dr. David Haase, Founder and Executive Physician at MaxWell Clinic, to discuss health strategies for entrepreneurs. Dr. Haase shares the importance of brain health, how sleep impacts performance, and how ambition, learning, and community support long-term wellness.

Quotable Moments:

  • “Healthcare is very different than entrepreneurism in that it’s very much assumed that there is a right answer.”
  • “Money follows incentives. And so if you set up a certain incentive structure, the system is going to adapt.”
  • “We need to change our focus, not just diagnose and treat disease, which is really important.”
  • “Sleep is the bane of the entrepreneur, and entrepreneurs who can sleep are healthy entrepreneurs.”
  • “You make the decision to choose the life that is yours to live and do it your way.”

Action Steps:

  1. Prioritize sleep as a performance strategy: Treat your bedroom as a sanctuary for rest and recovery, so your brain can function at its highest level.
  2. Focus on brain health first: Since better decisions, beliefs, and behaviors depend on brain function, make cognitive wellness a core part of your health plan.
  3. Look at health as a whole-person system: Consider how your body, beliefs, behaviors, relationships, environment, and goals work together to shape your well-being.
  4. Continue learning as you age: Staying ambitious and challenging your brain with new information can help support long-term cognitive health and vitality.
  5. Build supportive wellness communities: Surround yourself with people who encourage healthier choices, accountability, and a more sustainable approach to personal growth.
